Between April and September every night is a junior cricket night at Muckamore Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club. Whilst during these months Monday evening is the official practice time for boys and girls at under 11, 13, 15 & 17 level, if you make the worthwhile trip down to Muckamore any other evening you’re sure to see groups of children happily whiling away their time practising their cricket skills.
This sight is testament to the ever-increasing effort Muckamore are putting into junior cricket. Last year saw the junior section at times having over 75 children turn up to receive coaching, with over 50 of these children taking out club membership which not only allowed them to play cricket matches for any of the club teams but tennis as well. These children receive cricket coaching at their respective age group from qualified cricket coaches from within the club. Additionally they also receive top tips from the club’s overseas cricket professional.
Muckamore put great emphasis on welcoming children from all backgrounds and the result of this hard work can be seen by the ever-increasing number of children playing cricket from varied upbringings and backgrounds. The additional fact that club coaches go into numerous local schools to run coaching sessions reinforces the club’s cross community ethos.
Muckamore are in the process of drawing up a Junior Cricket Development Plan incorporating medium to long term strategic aims that should see a significant increase in not only the number of children taking up cricket but also increase both team and individual success at under 11, 13 & 15 levels.
